Earth Day Reflection

“We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children.” ~ Native American Proverb

This year, on Earth Day, we can’t help but reflect on our trip to Joshua Tree last June. Part of what spurred our desire to see this uniquely beautiful landscape was the fact that many sources predict the severe disappearance of this distinctly Southwestern species within our lifetime.

According to the Wild Earth Guardians, “The Southwest is a climate change ‘hotspot’ and is already feeling the effects, with higher temperatures, longer droughts, and larger and more frequent fires. Taken together, these climate change impacts could spell disaster for Joshua trees. The trees need wet intervals to successfully reproduce and cold periods to thrive, and may take decades to recover from fires.”

So today, and everyday, as we celebrate our relationship with this incredible planet we call home, we choose to leave the windows open a little longer, embrace the rain, and re-evaluate the impact of our habits. Because, as the brilliant wilderness advocate John Muir stated, “When one tugs at a single thing in nature, he finds it attached to the rest of the world.”
